Civilisation and its Discontents leads from the oceanic feeling (with its other face, the death drive) to original violence, the basic narcissistic movement of self-conservation, and to the superego, the heir to the id and of the parental prohibitions, which introjects' this violence turned against the subject, equivalent to the death drive. Freud's book implies that very few people can establish a true post-oedipal superego, remaining subject to the cultural superego's repression.
