LASER-COOLING OF A SODIUM ATOMIC-BEAM BY MEANS OF STRONG ELECTRIC-FIELDS

摘要
A method of slowing and cooling of a thermal sodium atomic beam using strong electric fields to hold the atoms in resonance during slowing is described. Due to the complicated level scheme of the D2-line (which was used as cooling transition) in high electric fields, one has to use a two-frequency laser light with a frequency spacing equal to the hyperfine splitting of the ground level and polarized parallel to the electric field. Deceleration of the atoms down to 17 m/s could be experimentally achieved.
