摘要
The analysis of borrowing nativization and of Brazilian EFL students' oral performance in English has demonstrated that similar strategies are used in both cases. The foreign syllable patterns tend to be interpreted in accordance with the patterns that prevail for Brazilian Portuguese. Whenever a consonant occurs in a position that is not allowed by the phonotactic rules of Brazilian Portuguese, either the consonant is eliminated or a vowel is inserted and, thereupon, the consonant is transferred to the new syllable. Once a foreign word is resyllabified according to the Portuguese language parameters, all of the phonological processes that are syllable dependent may apply to it. Therefore, syllable constituency has proved to be essential to justify the choices made by Brazilian speakers/students when pronouncing an English word.
