THE PORTSMOUTH WASTE-WATER DISPOSAL SCHEME

This Paper describes the historical background to a major wastewater disposal project serving a population of around 200 000 people and discusses the design options considered. The Paper then describes an outfall headworks constructed within a very confined operational site. The works at this site also included the uprating of an existing pumping station and the provision of an integrated control system linking the whole installation. The Paper describes tank storage to limit spillage of high volumes of stormwater which arise from the combined sewerage system; and also the construction of a 5700 m long sea outfall, a rising main and other associated works.
