Two hundred eighty-one female members of the Pennsylvania Nurses Association responded to a survey regarding their consumption and knowledge of alcohol. While the vast majority of the subjects were abstainers or light drinkers and the percentage of heavy drinkers lower than that suggested in the literature, the results indicate the need for some concern about the alcohol-related behavior of some nurses. The scores on the knowledge inventory support the need for increased alcohol awareness among nurses as well as the importance of an alcohol knowledge instrument focused on the short and long-term effects of the drug.
