摘要
Differences in physiological activity between stereoisomers has long been known. In 1858 Pasteur showed that the dextro form of ammonium tartrate was specifically fermented by Penicillium glaucum, which leaves the levo form unaffected. In recent years it has become clear that the biological effects of many drugs are produced by specific stereoisomers: other stereoisomers may in fact be harmful. This article reviews the way in which the concept of chirality has influenced manufacturing processes in the pharmaceutical industry.
