EFFECT OF TIME OF HARVEST OF SWEET SORGHUM (SORGHUM-BICOLOR) GENOTYPES ON ITS YIELD AND JUICE QUALITY FOR JAGGERY PREPARATION

A field experiment was conducted during the rainy season (kharif) 1989 to study the performance of 5 genotypes of sweet sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] under 4 different dates of harvest for their yield and juice quality. Genotypes 'SSV 84', 'SSV 12611' and 'SSV 74' gave significantly higher jaggery yield (2.6, 2.5 and 2.0 tonnes/ha respectively) than that of 'SSV 96'. Harvesting dates of sweet sorghum showed significant differences in observed brix, corrected brix (%), sucrose (%), pol reading, purity coefficient, juice yield and jaggery yield. The optimum time of harvesting for maximum juice and jaggery yield was at 100 days after sowing.
