摘要
The grain boundary oxidation of pressurized-water reactor spent fuel in a dry air atmosphere at 195-degrees-C was investigated by light optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The oxidation occurred by U4O9 formation along the grain boundaries and was visible by anomalous electron backscattering in the SEM. Image analysis of samples oxidized to a bulk oxygen-to-uranium ratio of 2.16 indicated U4O9 penetration into the prior UO2 grains at a rate of 4.7 nm/hour.
