Escherichia coli from milk samples in rural properties of Jatai, State of Goias - Brazil

The verotoxigenic Escherichia coli are strains cause cytotoxic effects in Vero cells culture; of these, the O157:H7 is considered the most virulent and pathogenic for bith animal and to man. The objective of this work was isolate strains of E. coli from milk samples from cows of milk producing farms in the southwest region of the state of Goias. Thirty-five milk samples in the dry season and rain were collected for a total of 70 samples. After observing the morphotinctorial and biochemical characteristics, it was found during the dry season 89,52% of samples positive for E. coli and in the rainy season 91,14% were positive for E. coli. This discovery is very worrying because we emphasize the possible presence of E. coli producing verotoxin (VTEC) or enterohaemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC).
