Different types of error are described using clinical examples: calibration, offset and drift. The terms precision and accuracy are defined. Errors relating to specific measurements are discussed: non-invasive and invasive blood pressure, pulse oximetry, fuel cell and infrared gas analysis, electrocardiography and blood gas analysis. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd.
