A longitudinal study of the developmental nature of career decidedness and the relation of grade, socioeconomic status, and gender to such decidedness was undertaken on a sample of 214 white South African high school students. The results of the study support a developmental progression toward greater career decidedness for all students except those who progressed from Grades 9 to 11. Socioeconomic status and gender were not significantly related to career decidedness. The implications of these results for future research and for the career education of adolescents are considered.
