A SHORT-TERM PSYCHOEDUCATIONAL MULTIPLE-FAMILY GROUP FOR BIPOLAR PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES

The author conducted short-term multiple-family group therapy for patients with bipolar disorder and their families using the psychoeducational model developed in the past decade for the treatment of schizophrenia. A complete therapeutic course included weekly two-hour sessions for 14 weeks, and educational information shaved with the group members was related exclusively to bipolar disorder. This article discusses a variety of treatment issues relative to groups, mental illness, family as team members, and confidentiality. A description of the overall program and each of the psychoeducational sessions is presented. Socialization and bond strengthening techniques were built into the presentations. Education and group processes were used equally. Patient and family responses to the psychoeducational model were overwhelmingly positive, but analysis of data remains to be completed to determine its effectiveness.
