State, culture and masculinity in North-eastern Mexico after the Revolution

This paper explores how the Mexican State, after the armed struggle between 1910 and 1920 known as the Mexican Revolution, forged a national culture with distinctive characteristics in regions such as Tamaulipas. A regional and masculine identity characterized by a cult of local heroes' courage and honour, praise of the cowboy as a symbol of manhood, the questioning of male homosexuality, the legitimacy of prestige, respect, and men's violence was implicitly fostered at school, in family and in the community.
