Preventive Treatment for Patients With Migraine and Cardiovascular Disease

Migraine is a disabling disorder that also carries a significant economic burden. Migraines have been associated with a range of comorbid conditions, including cardiovascular disorders such as hypertension, stroke, and myocardial infarction. The triptans and ergot alkaloids indicated for the management of acute migraine attacks are often contraindicated in patients with an increased risk of cardiovascular disorders. The management of migraine patients with cardiovascular disorders, therefore, is challenging. In addition to emerging medications, there are existing prophylactic therapies that may be effective for preventing migraine attacks. Furthermore, many of the prophylactic therapies may be used to treat comorbid cardiovascular disorders.
