Forest zonation and faunal assemblages of the Pol'ana Biosphere Reserve UNESCO

Selected faunal assemblages (Orthoprera, Mantodea, Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, Aves) have been investigated along a transect (464-1458 m a.s.l.) covering four generalized forest zones of the Pol'ana Biosphere Reserve (central Slovakia). Vertical distribution of insects and birds in the area of interest are affected by a number of factors, of which the geographical position of the Pol'ana massif, its geomorphology and substratum, various anthropogenic impacts (mostly deforestation and pasture) as well as requirements of species play an important role. Results support importance of this mountain area in the international context.
