摘要
The IR spectroscopic data showed that the Claus reaction takes place according to a new mechanism which includes the reaction of SO2 absorbed in a reversible molecular form with MoS2 formed as a result of dissociative adsorption of H2S with the participation of a surface polymolybdenum compound. According to this mechanism, the elementary event of the reaction takes place in cycles of reduction (formation of MoS2)-oxidation (formation of S(x)) of the active sites in the surface polymolybdenum compound. The presence of oxygen in the reaction mixture does nto deactivate the catalyst, since the sulfates formed are primarily surface compounds and are easily back-titrated by H2S.
