SPECTRUM EFFICIENCY OF PACKET-SWITCHED DATA IN MOBILE CELLULAR NETWORKS

The performance of (downlink) packet switched data traffic in the mobile cellular network is analysed in terms of probability of successful packet reception and spectrum efficiency. In the analysis, effect of shadowing on both capture and non-fade duration is taken into account. Further, we have introduced a new definition of spectrum efficiency, which is defined here to be proportional to packet throughput. Numerical results are obtained for a channel bit rate of 16 kb/s and 256 kb/s, in case of a receiving mobile terminal traveling near the cell boundary and in case of a quasi-uniform offered traffic distribution. The results show that optimum cluster size (i.e for which spectrum efficiency is maximal) reaches small values for the first case and approaches cluster size one for the second case.
