MICELLAR EFFECTS UPON THE ACIDIC HYDROLYSIS OF PARASUBSTITUTED N-PHENYLBENZOHYDROXAMIC ACIDS

The rates of hydrolysis of some para-substituted N-phenylbenzohydroxamic acids [X-C6H4(C = O)N(OH)C6H5, where X=H, p-Cl, p-NO2, p-CH3O, p-CH3] under acidic conditions with cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide as cationic surfactant have been investigated. Reaction rate orders have been obtained. Cationic micelles of CTAB inhibit the hydrolysis reaction. The kinetic forms are explained quantitatively in terms of reactions in the aqueous and micellar pseudophase.
