UPTAKE OF ZN, CO, FE AND CR BY WATER HYACINTH (EICHHORNIA-CRASSIPES) IN LAKE CHIVERO, ZIMBABWE

摘要
The levels of Zn, Co, Fe, Ni, Cu, Pb and Cr were determined in water hyacinth growing in Lake Chivero, Zimbabwe, as well as in the water of the lake. Except for Ni, for which levels tended to be similar both in the tops and roots of the plant, levels of the other elements studied were significantly higher in the roots than in the tops. The concentrations of the elements in the plants were much higher than those in the water. Concentration factors of up to 33, 1.7 x 10(2), 7 x 10(2) and 8.9 X 10(3) in the tops, and 1.7 x 10(2), 2.7 x 10(2), 2 x 10(3) and 1.5 x 10(4) in the roots were found for Co, Zn, Cr and Fe, respectively.
