THE FUTURE OF NUCLEAR-POWER IN THE UNITED-KINGDOM

Despite a major contribution to the provision of UK electricity supplies, considerable uncertainties face the UK's nuclear power industry. Important challenges are posed by questions of ownership, financing of new plants and of decommissioning, high level radioactive waste disposal, environmental impact and the general competitive position of nuclear power in relation to other forms of electricity production. The costs of nuclear power are discussed in this article, written in anticipation of the government's Nuclear Review.
