EXPERT DATA CAPTURE SYSTEM FOR SHOP FLOOR MANAGEMENT

Data Capture System (DCS) monitors the performance of machines in an industrial shop floor. From each machine, the DCS acquires data which describe the state of the machine. The acquired data is then analysed for possible improvements in productivity. The Expert Data Capture System (EDCS) has an incorporated intelligence. It has a number of 'specialists' each one working with a specific objective. They contribute, in a collective manner, to suggest improvements in shop floor management. The paper discusses an interface hardware for IBM/compatible PCs and proposes a methodology in building up the EDCS. An example is presented to illustrate how a specialist works towards its goal.
