摘要：

The thorax is a mechanically complex assemblage of skeletal structures and muscles called on to perform diverse functions, one of which is breathing. Activation of the respiratory muscles is highly coordinated; influenced by mechanical and chemical stimuli, it involves all levels of the central nervous system. Automatic and voluntary breathing appear to have separate pathways but may interact in many normal activities. The normal pattern of muscle activation improves the mechanical efficiency and effectiveness of the respiratory pump.
