摘要
The application of a plasma-sprayed hydroxyapatite coating to an orthopaedic implant may affect iu fatigue performance. The effect of such a coating on Ti-6Al-4V was studied using rotating bend fatigue tests. It was found that the fatigue endurance limit was reduced by approximately 40% after a commercial plasma-spraying process, while similar specimens coated via an adhesive bonding route showed no such decrease. The reasons for this are discussed, and the enhanced initiation of fatigue cracks in the plasma-sprayed specimens is ascribed to the severe grit blasting process used to ensure the adhesion of the plasma-sprayed coatings, and to an effect of the plasma-spraying process itself.
