Radiation-induced radicals in coral, single-crystal aragonite, synthetic calcite and calcium phosphates are studied by ESR at low temperatures. The isotropic ESR signal at g=2.0007, which is used for ESR dating of CaCO3, disappears below 200 K, and a spectrum with an anisotropic line shape is detected. The linewidth of the isotropic signal increases between 220 and 200 K with decreasing temperature. The g=2.0007 signal is attributable to rotating CO2‒ions. © 1990 IOP Publishing Ltd.
