This paper presents a new model to address the part selection and assignment problems. The uniqueness of the model lies in that it captures the cellular layout feature of many existing flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs) when dealing with part selection problem and simultaneously solves part selection and part (operation) assignment problems. To illustrate the application of the model, an example is included, followed by brief discussions.
