CARDIOMYOPATHIES IN CHILDREN

The epidemiology, etiology and natural history of cardiomyopathies in children are still largely unknown but supposed to differ from those of adults. High mortality rates and lack of specific therapy are typical for this heterogenous group of heart diseases. In recent years, the application of the techniques of molecular biology has provided new information about the possible etiologies of both hypertrophic and dilated cardiomyopathy. However, much experimental and clinical research is needed for better understanding of the pathogenesis of cardiomyopathies and for developing treatment and prevention.
