Renal Failure in End-stage Liver Disease and Liver Transplantation

Renal failure in ESLD and liver transplantation is a serious and life-threatening problem. It is important to identify patients who are at higher risk of this complication. Early diagnosis of renal dysfunction and optimal medical management preoperatively, during surgery and postoperatively in the intensive care unit will lessen the chance of worsening renal function. If irreversible renal failure develops, patients should be considered for possible renal transplantation in the future. Hopefully, continued research to better understand this complex process will allow for continued improvements in patient outcome.
