By suggesting that gas kinetic collisions are the source of irreversibility, Boltzmann's kinetic equation leads to a paradox. In a monograph entitled Non-equilibrium statistical thermodynamics, applied to fluid dynamics and laser physics the author developed an original alternative theory. The fundamental ideas supporting this new approach are traced in the present paper. It is shown that the source of irreversibility resides in the recurrent interaction of the macroscopic systems under investigation with the surroundings. This is investigated using a generalized Massieu function as the most convenient thermodynamic tool. The traditional macroscopic variables are replaced by a complete set of intensities conjugate to the extensive mechanical properties. The predictive value of the new method is illustrated by the example of heat now driven by a temperature gradient.
