VETERINARY-MEDICINE ON THE MOVE

This article has been written with the view to making freshmen of the 1991 academic vintage understand that in following their professional ambition of becoming a "veterinarian" they should not simply have in mind curative practice. Curative veterinary medicine in the future will be supplemented with additional consumeroriented aspects in fields of general health as well as of protection of consumers, environment and animals. There is a historic tradition, beginning in antiquity but disrupted later on, when veterinary next to human medicine was deliberately practised in the service of man. Reference is made, in that context, to enzootic control, monitoring of food industries, the residue problem, protection of fauna and flora as well as a close watch on genetic engineering.
