摘要
Zirconium films of thickness of the order of a single atomic layer were deposited and subsequently oxidized on a single crystal Pt(001) surface. The plot of the Auger signal versus deposition time shows that zirconium oxide grows following the layer-by-layer mechanism. The adsorption of carbon monoxide on the surface was studied as a function of zirconium oxide coverage. Taking into account the variations in the oxide surface density detectable by low-energy electron diffraction, the main effect of the overlayer is of physically blocking CO chemisorption.
