This is the first of three articles on neurotoxicology of companion animals. Part 1 will cover the classification, diagnosis, and management of neurotoxicoses and a brief survey of toxicants that primarily affect the nervous system. Part 2 will discuss common pesticide-induced neurotoxic syndromes as they present in dogs and cats. The last article will focus on heavy metal neurotoxicoses. A comprehensive review of neurotoxicology is beyond the scope of these articles, and available texts on neurophysiology, neurochemistry, and neurotoxicology should be consulted for additional information. 1-5
