BEHAVIOR OF THE WALL-JET CLAY-MODIFIED ELECTRODE

A WJ configuration for the CME was investigated. The steady state behavior of a clay film is consistent with its behavior in quiescent solutions and suggests that the equilibrium state of the film following swelling in different electrolyte + solvent solutions can be monitored at a single CME without external transfer of the electrode. The film retains a memory of its swollen state and resists removal of water even in the presence of high concentrations of NaCl. These results have important implications for the use of CME in permeation experiments, in that the film retains a memory of its swelling history. The kinetics of swelling of the clay can be followed, but the data are convoluted with the time required to displace the stagnant layer from the surface of the electrode. © 1992.
