LABORATORY SERVICE USE IN A UNIVERSITY HEALTH CLINIC

We examined the use of laboratory services in a university health clinic. Data collected from the International Classification of Diseases Ninth Revision Clinical Modification Code and the Current Procedural Terminology Code were tabulated and analyzed from a 2-year period. Laboratory tests most frequently performed for this population were urinalyses, blood counts, wet preps, urine and gonorrhea cultures, and a variety of serologic tests used to screen for chlamydia, beta streptococcus, Epstein-Barr mononucleosis, and pregnancy. The findings attest to the uniqueness of the college population when compared with the general physician office laboratory and the importance of health services and educational planning for this population.
