French interlanguage research: where are we now?

This article presents a short overview of the present research in French interlanguage. We briefly summarise our knowledge of the development of French as a foreign languages to date. This outline of the present research focuses on morphosyntactic and lexical knowledge of the learners as well as on the developmental routes of French. Then, we turn our attention to the explanations proposed by different theories in order to explain the nature of the learners' linguistic system and the stages of acquisition observed. Finally, several future research pathways are proposed bearing in mind our limited knowledge in many areas.
