A STUDY OF THE PASSIVE BEHAVIOR OF BERYLLIUM IN AQUEOUS-SOLUTIONS

摘要
The passive behaviour of commercially pure Be(99.0 and 99.8%) has been studied by means of electrochemical measurements, solution analyses and electron microscopy. Aqueous test solutions (25-degrees-C, pH 1-15) of orthophosphate, orthoborate, carbonate, formiate, acetate, oxalate or NaOH were employed. In some solutions, Be exhibited a potential independent passive current density up to the oxygen evolution potential, whereas pitting corrosion was initiated in other solutions. The passive current depended on the pH and the concentration of the weak acids in the solution. The passive film was identified (ex situ) as microcrystalline BeO.
