摘要
In 1988, the US and Canadian governments extended an official apology and issued financial compensation to persons of Japanese ancestry (Nikkei) for their removal from the West Coast and confinement without trial during World War II. Whereas many US public institutions have since participated in educational projects that emphasize the historical significance of Japanese American confinement, efforts to inform the public about the Japanese Canadian WWII experience have frequently encountered resistance. These developments stem from critical distinctions in the wartime and post-WWII Nikkei experience in Canada and the US, but also to point to important differences in American and Canadian approaches to addressing past wrongs.
