Orthognathic Treatment: Patient's Perspective. A Survey Questionnaire

Background. Dentofacial deformities are related with inappropriate skeletal structure of mandibular and maxillary bones. Orthognathic surgery is performed in order to improve proper facial proportions, as well as its function and aesthetics. Patients aware of their deformity seek information related to the potential choices of treatment. Surgeries influence both physical and mental aspects of patient's life. Information from internet forums often influences patients' behavior before and after surgery. Objectives. The aim of this study was to analyze the perception of dentofacial deformities and individual impact of orthognathic surgery on patients operated and being prepared for surgery based on correlation of fears and expectations before surgery with opinions regarding the operation's effects expressed by post-operative participants. Material and Methods. The study material consisted of participants from the internet forum for patients with dentofacial deformities (www. progenia. org) divided into 2 study groups: I -patients before surgery: 80 people (69 F, 11 M), II - 50 people (43 F, 7 M) after surgery. In the study, the authors used a self-designed anonymous survey questionnaire. Results. The most negative aspect related with dentofacial deformity was noticed on the lower parts of the face (56% F, 71% M, group II), which was the main reason for participating in the surgery. A lot of patients with dentofacial deformities admit that they lack self-confidence (28% F, 39% M). Respondents (65% F, 64% M) conclude that this treatment might change their lives. The sense of attractiveness and self-assessment increases after surgery. Moreover, some changes in the stomatognathic system are noticed. Conclusions. In most cases patients get information with regard to their dentofacial deformity from doctors. After surgery, the majority of patients expect changes in their appearance and better functioning. Respondents are afraid of post-surgical paresthesias. More than 50% of participants indicate a very good post-operative convalescence. In almost all cases surgical expectations came true. Many favorable opinions concerning surgical effects are noticed. About 82% of respondents conclude that it was worth to participate in treatment and they recommend this solution for other patients with similar deformities
