By examining a cockpit as a cognitive system, light is shed on the shortcomings of dominant frameworks for analyzing technological changes in this profession. In effect, these models fail to take into account the distributed nature of representations about the speed. The pilots use two types of cognitive representations: one is external the other is internal. Piloting as a cognitive activity resides not just in the skull but in a system inclusive of mental representations as well as external representational media.
