The sculptor Juan de Villanueva and the colony of Asturian artists in Madrid in the first half of the 18th century

During his long life in Madrid the sculptor Juan de Villanueva y Barbales had a close personal and professional relationship with some other Asturian artists that temporary or permanently settled down at the capital between ca. 1700-1750. Those relationships are used here to show the existence of a small community of masters born in or natives of Asturias that had its leader in Villanueva since 1730 and that embraced very remarkable individuals in the Spanish History of Art such as Juan Alonso de Villabrille or Miguel Jacinto Melendez.
