The potential development of the gas turbine as a key component of modern fossil power station engineering is not exhausted with the engineering of present-day serial engines. In the efforts for higher unit performance at improved efficiency, higher turbine entrance temperatures are aspired, which, however, correspondingly increase the requirements on structural members. This opens up the question on the choice of a suitable cooling medium. It is of considerable reactive effect on the total process, whether the compressor air is recuperative-cooled or by injected water, or even by using steam as cooling medium. These relations are being investigated on the basis of a calculation model. One result indicates that the steam cooling in the open cycle, under the conditions of the GDT-process (gas and steam turbine process), appears to be highly suitable.
