CARTOGRAPHS OF SPAIN IN THE LYRICS OF JOAO CABRAL DE MELO NETO

The cultural references to Spain are present in Joao Cabral de Melo Neto's poems since his work Pedra do sono (1942), and, consequently, the Spanish geography appears in several poems of his literary production. In 1990, the poet expresses his preference for the region of Andalusia when he publishes Sevilha andando e andando Sevilha. In this work, the speaker presents a city marked by a sensual and feminine essence, in which the space is materialized in the form of a Sevillian woman. The work also reveals a Seville toured by the speaker itself, and brings us the mapping of the city in its traditional neighborhoods and in its geometric features, by describing its architecture, the richness of its everyday life and the Andalusian characters. This article aims at examining how the Spanish territory, represented in the poem A sevilhana que nao se sabia from the book above, constitutes a space of intercultural relations between Brazil and Spain through the poet's view of the culture of the Other.
