摘要
The article describes the results of a study of the environment and the use of natural resources in a coastal area in the Northwestern Province, Sri Lanka. The economy in the area is based mainly on fisheries and agriculture. The study shows that there is significant overuse of the natural resources in the area. Fishing in Puttalam Lagoon has exceeded the carrying capacity of the ecosystem and a number of habitats of critical importance to the productivity of the ecosystem are also under severe pressure. Wetlands with mangroves and other vegetation are being transformed into prawn farms at a rapid rate, coral reefs are being degraded due to the use of destructive fishing techniques. Based on these finding the article recommends several management alternatives.
