RURAL-URBAN DIFFERENCES IN INCOME LEVEL AND IN LIVING-CONDITIONS IN HUNGARY

In 1990 Hungary underwent a revolutionary change of the economic, social and political system. The transition caused important short-term economic hardship. Rural areas suffer more from these hardships than urban areas, and eastern Hungary suffers more than western Hungary. Urban-rural and west-east differences in income level, unemployment, poverty, housing conditions, etc., are demonstrated on the basis of a national survey in May-June 1992. The possibilities for protecting rural areas and backward regions from pauperization are evaluated.
