Enocell Oy's new pulp mill at Uimaharju, one of the most recent large-scale projects in the pulp industry, has now been started up. The mill is built to meet the latest stringent environmental requirements. Both ECF and TCF pulps will be produced. One of the cornerstones of the whole fibre line is the first SuperBatch(TM) cooking plant, which is designed for extremely low kappa numbers. Now, after some four months in operation, all expectations have been fulfilled. The mill started up successfully and is now running close to full production. Pulp quality has shown a steady improvement, even though the kappa level after cooking is 10-15 for softwood and 10-13 for hardwood compared to earlier figures of 30 and 18, respectively. The mill is running far below the discharge limits set by the authorities. To cap it all, Enocell has already set an unofficial world record by producing birch pulp to a brightness of 87% ISO without any chlorine compounds. And even this may not be the limit.
