A Brabender Plasticorder is used to study the mixing characteristics and the possible chemical interactions in the blends of PVC and HNBR. From the torque-time profiles, it is evident that the blend crosslinks during high temperature mixing. The reaction takes place through the amide and acid groups formed in HNBR by the hydrolysis of the nitrile groups, in presence of HCl liberated from PVC. The extent of reaction and the degree of crosslinking depend on the processing conditions, blend composition and the presence of a stabilizer, as evident from swelling and infrared spectroscopic analysis.
