A MANUFACTURING STRATEGY MODEL FOR INTERNATIONAL TECHNOLOGY-TRANSFER

Recently there has been a burgeoning interest in the topics of manufacturing strategy and international technology transfer. To date, few models exist that combine these important concepts. Those that do ignore the issue of appropriate technology regarding the resource infrastructure of the recipient country. The need to transfer technology that can be adapted to local resource conditions existing in the recipient country to assure appropriateness and achieve competitiveness is discussed. The manufacturing strategy model developed by Hill is extended to encompass the factors important to the strategic decisions of international transfer of technology, including the purpose and mode of the transfer as well as the environmental conditions of the recipient country. © 1991.
