Antithyroid Medications for Graves' Disease

Graves' disease is an autoimmune disorder that occurs when the immune system attacks the thyroid gland and causes it to produce too much thyroid hormone (hyperthyroidism). The exact cause of Graves' disease is not known. The disorder can affect anyone at any age, but it is more common in women. If left untreated, Graves' disease can cause a severe, life-threatening crisis (i.e., thyroid storm). The primary goals of treatment are to eliminate excess thyroid hormone and minimize the long-term consequences of the disease. Treatments include radioactive iodine, antithyroid medications (propylthiouracil, methimazole), and surgery. Beta-blockers may be used to provide symptomatic relief.
