摘要
Life in the Dominican Republic sugar cane worker communities or bateyes is characterized by high levels of insecurity and isolation. Using quantitative and qualitative methodologies, this study aimed to explore school and family conditions, and the level of basic psychological processes of children schooled in these sugar cane plantations compared to those who attend school in the village of Guaymate. Taking as a reference Piaget's development stages, the results yielded a very low level of development in both cases, but the difference is overwhelming in the case of the bateyes. The study serves as a departure point for reflecting on the role schools play in overcoming or perpetuating social inequalities.
