THE DEVELOPMENT AND CONSTRUCT-VALIDATION OF A PORTUGUESE VERSION OF AN ACADEMIC SELF-CONCEPT SCALE

For a sample of 159 female students and for a sample of 236 male students enrolled in a chemical engineering school at a state university in Brazil, the major purpose of this investigation was to obtain evidence of the construct validity of a parallel Portuguese version of the Dimensions of Self Concept Scale Form H. From both exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, promising evidence of the construct validity was obtained for each of the five subscales (Level of Aspiration, Anxiety, Academic Interest and Satisfaction, Leadership and Initiative, and Identification vs. Alienation), the titles of which corresponded to the hypothesized constructs. Internal consistency estimates of the reliability of all five 16-item subscales for the two samples varied between .80 and .86.
