World-Class Manufacturing requires that people and machines be organized along the work flow pattern, integrating resources in the cause of product improvement, increased productivity and product quality, reduced inventory investments, time-based competitiveness and a host of other dominant themes devised to reduce operating costs and at the same stance, increase customer service. Manufacturers in the U.S. and around the world are continually striving for global comptitiveness and sustained profitability. Electronic Data Interchange/Electronic Graphics Interchange (EDI/EGI) used in combination with other automated data collection techniques, notably Bar Codes, is allowing manufacturers to enhance the performance of procurement, production and required timely customer delivery functions. This paper provides an overview of both the Bar Code and EDI/EGI technologies, System Components, System integration consideration and provides a typical of application of these technologies in production and distribution of goods.
